The small islands community developing management in Indonesia underline the fact that Indonesia is one of the largest archipelagic state in the world that has 17,480 islands, most of them are small islands (<2000 km2) and uninhabited.
Beside That, most small islands community in Indonesia are still facing isolation, which make them vulnerable and victims of enormous human activities and environmental pressures. Their economies are also heavily dependent on narrow resource based with limited infrastructures to fulfill the necessities of small island community in Indonesia, let alone provide them access to international markets.
The small islands community in Indonesia are also vulnerable to natural and environmental disasters such as earthquake, tsunami, hurricane and others with limited capacity to respond and recover. This is further exacerbated by the effects of global warming which is very alarming. The cost of losing the richness and variety of cultures as well as flora, fauna, animal and marine life on the small islands under threat is a price too expensive for us and for the world to pay.
